About Us
Modern Musician opened on the 26th July 2008, as a small guitar store in the back of another business premise, staffed by Nick Boron (owner/operator), Steve Palfreyman & Sam Tilley.
We were the sole stockists of Guitars and amps by Gibson, Epiphone, ESP, Marshall, Orange, Hartke and Roland, and recording equipment by RØDE, Shure, Presonus and Digidesign.
Nick had spent the previous 4 year working – and then managing – another business in the market, and whilst at the time only 21 years old, had gained experience and key business relationships and contacts well beyond his age.
After discussing his frustrations with many suppliers and industry contacts, Nick was encouraged and supported to fill the gap in the market, and open his own store, Modern Musician.
After only 4 months we’d moved to our own shopfront, right across the street and added Sonor and Mapex drum kits, Roland Electronic percussion, Zildjian cymbals, and Mackie professional audio.
2009 saw the addition of Line 6 Amps and Effects, Ashdown Bass Amplification, Martin Guitars, Paiste Cymbals, Yamaha Professional Audio and Takamine guitars to the store.
It also saw Steve depart the business, to follow his dreams and move to Melbourne, to study, work, and attempt to break the market with his band, “The Overview”. As a result it saw the appointment of two new team members: Charles Price and Dave Edmondson.
Charles’ intimate knowledge of guitar wiring and electronics, and passion for shred saw Modern Musician develop, and become the most experienced, and in demand musical instrument supplier in Hobart.
2010 brought with it Ampeg bass amps, Gibson Acoustic guitars, Yamaha Guitars, Schecter guitars, and DW/PDP Drums.
It also saw Dave leave his part time position with us, to start with Australian Air Express, and now delivers to us on an almost daily basis.
In July, Nick traveled to meet with Jim D’Addario of the D’Addario string fame. July also saw Sam’s application to join the Tasmanian Police Department approved, and his departure from Modern Musician. Shortly after, Mischa Calcagno joined the team, and the rest as we say, is History.
