Handcrafted in Japan, the FG9 R steel-string acoustic guitar features an Adirondack spruce top and Indian rosewood back and sides—and its extraordinary projection and clarity make it ideal for singer-songwriters.

The Yamaha FG9 is Yamaha's flagship steel-string acoustic guitar. Featuring solid Adirondack spruce tops and either Indian rosewood or mahogany bodies, FG9 delivers the outstanding projection characteristic of dreadnought-style instruments—while at the same time providing exceptional clarity and detailed articulation. This unique combination of penetrating projection and extraordinary clarity distinguishes the FG9 from all other instruments in its class.

• When designing the FG9, Yamaha employed cutting-edge acoustic measurement and 3D structural measurement processes to more fully understand how physical structure affects acoustic characteristics, and repeated prototypes were built by their custom shop’s skilled luthiers.

• The most distinctive new feature of the FG9 is its sound—a unique combination of clear top end and strong projection, which make it ideal for singer-songwriters.

Adirondack Spruce Tops With Tapered Edges
FG9 models feature Adirondack spruce top boards with tapered edges, providing structural strength while also allowing the body to vibrate more efficiently—a combination that contributes to both power and sensitivity.

Scientific Approach Integrated With Luthier Techniques
When designing the FG9, we employed cutting-edge acoustic measurement and 3D structural measurement processes to more fully understand how physical structure affects acoustic characteristics, and repeated prototypes were built by our custom shop’s skilled luthiers.

Bolt-on Neck Joint
The neck has a new structural design that combines bolt-on and glued construction to increase body vibration and improve maintainability. Neck and body joints are finished and adjusted with high precision.

Rounded V-shaped Neck
The rounded V-shaped neck is easy to grip and its durable semi-gloss polyurethane coating facilitates smooth hand movement.

Thin Nitrocellulose Lacquer Finish
The precision-engineered wood body is coated with a thin nitrocellulose lacquer that does not interfere with vibrations, allowing the true sound of the instrument to be heard.

Elegant While Understated Japanese Aesthetic
The distinctive fingerboard inlays resemble traditional Japanese Kumiki woodworking, while the rope-shaped inlay and purfling on the rosette is a motif that is deeply rooted in Japanese culture.
